The FTT (Fabric Touch Tester), offered by SDL Atlas, was honored on 13 December, 2016 at the 2016 Hong Kong Awards for Industries (HKAI) presentation ceremony. The FTT was bestowed the Grand Award in the Equipment and Machinery Design category.  The FTT was chosen from among a total of 234 entries.

The FTT provides a quick, scientific, and objective way to evaluate subjective hand feel properties. This innovative instrument measures skin touch comfort both objectively and quantitatively through incorporated sensors that calculate a fabric’s compression, friction, roughness, stiffness and bending properties. Through combining these indices, the FTT can predict a physical touch and hand value in one simple test. This unique instrument was developed by Hong Kong Research Institute of Textile and Apparel (HKRITA) and SDL Atlas.

Textile manufacturers, universities and R&D organizations can use the FTT to determine the comfort perception of the fabrics, from product design, to process control, to end products for consumers.
