KARACHI, Pakistan -- SDL Atlas chose the recent Textile Asia Exhibition and Conference to introduce its newest fabric testing innovation, the PillGrade (M227G) three-dimensional automated pilling grading system.
The Karachi show was the first time SDL Atlas conducted demonstrations of the new pilling system anywhere in Asia. The fabric scanning system and its patent-pending technology generated much interest among textile and apparel officials from within Pakistan and beyond. The demonstrations also received wide coverage from Karachi area media outlets.
"Throughout Pakistan and in the Asian marketplace as a whole, the application of quality testing is increasingly driven by advanced technology," said Simon Dakin, SDL Atlas Sales Manager for Pakistan, Bangladesh,Taiwan, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East. "Our new PillGrade fabric scanning and grading units provide the automated features and virtually immediate results major players in these markets seek for their test sites."
Using special control electronics and a motorized feed system, the PillGrade unit grades swatches of fabric on pilling, fuzziness and other surface properties. The new system measures fuzziness values, pills per square inch and square millimeter, average pill size and generates a pill diameter distribution histogram. Based on the data, the PillGrade assigns a grade ranging from 1.0 to 5.0. According to SDL Atlas PillGrade Product Specialist, Chris Lawler (clawler@sdlatlas.com), "The unit processes woven, non-woven, knit, fleece or other fabric samples in any weight, color and pattern and delivers results in five seconds. Users can view results on a monitor or print them out for sharing within their supply chain. The results of the PillGrade evaluations correspond to accepted ASTM and ISO standards."
